The Giant Eagle Karen Shapira Survivor Award

Karen Shapira died from breast cancer in 2005 at the age of 60.  She left behind a legacy of community service and outreach.  For more than 20 years, she was active in the Jewish community both in Pittsburgh and abroad. She also served on the Executive Committee of the United Way of Allegheny County, co-chairing the Early Childhood Initiative, and served on the boards of the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Jewish Healthcare Foundation in Pittsburgh, UPMC and Shady Side Academy. Governor Tom Ridge appointed Karen to the Pennsylvania Commission for Women.

The Pittsburgh Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, in conjunction with Giant Eagle, established the Giant Eagle Karen Shapira Survivor Award in 2006 in recognition of Karen’s commitment to her community and as a way to acknowledge other breast cancer survivors who carry on her legacy through their own service activities. Do you know a breast cancer survivor who has given of herself in support of other breast cancer survivors and who has tirelessly promoted breast cancer awareness? Submit your nomination describing why this survivor would be the best candidate to receive this award.

Tell us how she has made a positive impact in the lives of those around her.
When submitting a nomination, please include the full name, address, phone number and e-mail address of the person you are nominating along with your name, address, e-mail address and phone number. Nominations can be sent via e-mail to kpurcell@komenpittsburgh.org or mailed to the Komen Pittsburgh Affiliate at 1133 S. Braddock Ave., Pittsburgh, PA  15218. Please submit nominations by April 5, 2010.
